1. How long have you been making skate videos? and do you film other things rather than skating?
ive been making skate videos for 5 years now since i was 17 so i guess that means im 22 now.... ive done some other stuff that is kinda underground and secret never really been showed anywhere... but my main focus has always been rollerblading films
2. Of all the skaters you have filmed in your career, who has been your favorite, and why?
theres no way to really pick one person but a few who come to mind right away would have to be billy prislin because hes so random he just pulls shit out of his ass sometimes and really amazes you, also petty cause hes my roll dog and i dont think anybody can doubt him you might not like him but you know hes tight. but if i had to say who i thought was the best skater i would probably put my money on aaron feinberg i really dont think anyone can touch him... and if your reading this sayin "ohhh aarons not that good my homie charlie mcdougal from down the street is way better" well than you must have never seen him roll. ive never seen someone so good be so hated by so many jealous people.. i really believe that 95 % of rollerbladers are jealous of someone else in the industry and i think that deep down 75 %are jealous of aaron... i am.
3. Where do you think skating is going today...and where will it be tommorow?
im kinda disgusted with how skating is going today... i know what im supposed to say is that skating is life and skating is art and skating is this and that blah blah blah.. but honestly im not feeling it right now. everywhere i look theres some kid in a magazine doing a kind grind on a rail that looks like everyother rail out in the middle of a field, no emotion or character just a robot a machine performing functions... i mean thats all skating is today is functions. learn what is hot and do it until the new hot trick is out and than do that... i mean shit look at cess slides i already see it happening.. kids are just cess sliding home from school and the dentist these days.... people should quit using frames and just walk around in there skates and slide around on the sides of their boots. i dont know where skating is going tomorrow... i hope its going up and will be successful but i dont know what its gonna take. i know what its not going to take its not gonna take everyother person making a company. a couple years back people started saying that we as skaters need more companies, and so every other kid started a company most of these kids had never payed an electricity bill yet in there life but they figured they had what it takes to produce products of mass quantity and ship it on time around the world. now we see what has happened 101 rollerblading companies full of shit you really wouldnt want to wear in public... this might hurt some feelings but its about time....rollerblading needs to focus on jon julio josh petty shima elliot aaron feinberg dustin, gillan, rachard , franky , frederick and now im seeing some light from mike johnson.. blow them up all those guys are stars waiting to be... but instead of giving them whats owed to them what we should do.. we give tommy rizutto from souther montana a profile in a new video or danny loroscoe from east lansing an interview in daily bread .... i mean what the fuck is the goal here are we trying to completly erase the line from pros and grommets maybe we should just quit selling shit all together we could just put all of our money in a big gold pot and make clothes wheels skates and videos and on the first of every month well all get together in flourescent rainbow cutoffs and hand eachother product and praise eachother for being so great.
4. You spent alot of time on tour with USD...both in the past and the present in a number of countries...can you tell us what it is like to be on tour with skatings best?
i love usd, really i do its sometimes the only thing that keeps me in this. from the team to the crew behind it, its like my family i dont skate for usd but i feel more a part of that company than anyother thing in skating.... theyve always took care of me never doubted never went with anyone else, i like that. and i would do anything for them.
5. Like it or not, you and Dave Paine are compared to each other all of the time - (mostly by poeple who know little about skating) What would you say is the major differences between your filming styles and your approach to skating in general.
unlike what some people say i have respect for dave paine i have respect for anyone that sticks with something for so long. i only hope im still that committed when im thirty some years old to. the major differences i think is that dave is more focused on a global videogroove with dave if your bustin it dont matter who you are hes gonna give you a shot where as with me i dont care how tight you are if you dont have something special that i see im not putting you in. sounds fucked up but just how i am my videos are usually shorter than others but its cause im pickier. most people watch my movies years after they come out and then theyll email me and be like man i was watching elements 2 and that shit is still sick... thats just me "flo of the century, always timeless"
6. You represent FP - I know this is a question that 95% of the skating community would like to know....What is FP? Who is FP? and what does FP represent?
fp is future prospects it really should just be prospects and maybe not even that, we were just dumb young kids tryin to come up, made a little crew to get us hyped kinda how betor, roadhouse, and marques had the 714 crew nothing serious we didnt think it was gonna go nowhere but then everybody had a crew and now its just stupid when i hear people talk about there crews i feel nautious. one thing that our group has done is consistently come out hot... when was the last time someone said they were sick of seeing dominic or rachard... again if you are that someone you just might be jealous.
7. You filmed the FP section in the last videogroove production BMC - what was the message behind the section?
the message was clear, do what you like... if you want to have a section with no skating do it. the second fp section we made for bmc 2 had a real funny backlash, kids were online saying fp is a bunch of drug addicts and partiers what the fuck why dont they skate.... who the fuck do people think i am or anybody in fp is , you think were gonna hear that shit and be like damn you know what this is wrong... petty put that bottle down...your wasting your life you need to rollerblade.. man people are jumping off roofs these days and you think partying is bad....grow the fuck up!!!
8. You filmed the famous Video - "What do you believe in?" which was a collaboration with Arlo Eisenberg, and Shane Coburn from Mindgame...what was it like filming for such a cause - the opinions are split about this film as to the meaning although most all agree that the skating and editing is tight - do you think it was misinterpreted?
i think it was misinterpreted because i still fully dont get it arlo is kinda crazy... well let me rephrase that hes fuckin crazy.. i couldnt get a word in he had a vision and we went with it some people liked it but some people didnt... thats good ya know.. there should be a divide because i dont think that most people inside our circle are ready for uniqueness, things that test people... im not talking about taking after effect classes and learning how to flash text across the screen... thats not art thats to much fuckin time on your hands nerds. that video had no special effects but to me raised the most controversy after it out of anything released in our sport in 3 years not just videos.
9. FOR2 is my favorite skate video, and in my opinion your best next to the USD Video Coup de tat...What is the future of FOR?
the future is up in the air i think it can go either way everyone wants to say its going up and i really think it can everyone just needs to step back and see how they can help out everyone can do something benneficial for skating... this doesnt mean start a clothing company.
10. You personally have glorified and made many stars in Rollerblading...I think alot of kids would like to know...How do you know when you have discovered a Star? I mean look at Brian Shima, Rachard Johnson, Frankie Morales, Dominic Sagona...just to scrape the surface...How do you know when the kid is worth filming?
its just obvious to me that person just has something about them that looks special you can tell if you know what your looking for... the person cant just look cool to other rollerbladers this is a person that stands out just walking around in public.
11. In 2002 the level of skating is amazing...who will you be looking for to have in front of your lens this year? Who in your opinion will be the next all stars?
im really feelin dominic i think hes comin up this year for sure, also the duo out of ny dustin halleran and murda central mike johnson. for a international kid i would have to say clifford vil somethin he lives in south africa i think if he got some exposure he would be ill.
12. I held off in asking you about the USD Video Coup de tat - alot of kids say this video will never be topped...Can you tell us something about how this video was concieved and what special methods you used to film it? and also tell us what it was like to do such a Cult Video?
i was trippin when i realized that i was gonna be working on a video with all those guys. when i edited it was trippin watching it all come together . i would just sit in the room working on cuts taking hits on my speaker phone.. no one would ever talk back i would be like " is there anybody out there"
13. It is kind of a big secret whenever you start a new project - but by now everybody knows about the New USD Video you are doing...can you tell us a little bit about it?
the new usd video is my dream come true, ive always wanted a video to show more of the real side of everyone... lately ive been pushing in more and more random non skating shots to kinda make room for this project which is just complete chaos squeezed inside of a rv for 1 month. i just gotta say that this video will make you skate laugh and want to set off fireworks on your friends face while hes sleeping.
14. What else do you have in store for us in the future?
i dont know... whatever topic is sensitive at that time im sure ill be interested in exploiting it.
15. When you choose songs for your videos - what do you look for?
the same thing i look for in people i film... emotion ,character , got a story to tell
16. In the last few years alot of would be Videographers have been springing up - Matt Mickey, Felix Rioux, Chris Majette, and many more...what do you think about these "new school" filmers and who do you see excelling in the future?
my favorite filmmakers are shane coburn dustin latimer and michael kini. all three of them make movies that im willing to pay for if i had to. hopefully youll see more of there stuff really soon.
17. You lived with Josh Petty, Aaron Feinberg, and Kevin Gillan for a long time - what was it like living in this house? Please be specific.
definatly some of the best moments of my life were in that house we did so much shit that no one will ever know about, nobody filmed it really.. just the people who came by knew and were a part of what went down.
18. How do you feel about your life? are you content? what are your aspirations for the future? - Who is Joe Navran really?
ill never be content, just not me i guess... my goal was to make a difference in the industry and make some money. thats like the dream isnt it to make money doing something you love.
19. If you could tell the world anything at all - what would it be? thanks to korte for the time
